Big Sycamore Canyon Hike

Thank you to all the Scouts and parents who attended the Big Sycamore Canyon hike.  We discovered much wildlife (including a rattlesnake) and an abundance of flowers and plants.  It was a beautiful day for a hike!

Big Sycamore Canyon Hike

Sunday, March 13, 2022, 11am

We will meet in the parking lot for Sycamore Canyon in Satwiwa and make our way to the Pacific Coast to the Sycamore Canyon Campgrounds. The hike is 7.6 miles with a gentle slope from 800ft to sea level. THIS IS A ONE-WAY HIKE. We will NOT be hiking back to our starting point. You will need to arrange transportation from the Sycamore Canyon Campground in Malibu. The trail ends within the campground. There is a parking lot within the campground. There might be a parking entry fee. Some options for this include:

  1. Having one parent drop off participants at start and then pick up at end.
  2. Parking one car in campground parking lot earlier in the morning, being dropped off at start, and then driving home directly from Malibu.
  3. Arranging a ride to and from with another Scout family. Cell phones will work at the beginning and end of trail but there will be a long stretch where there will be no reception. Siblings are welcome to join us. We anticipate the hike to take approximately 3 hours considering a leisurely pace and a mid-point break for lunch. The entire trail can be found here:
https://www.alltrails.com/explore/trail/us/california/big-sycamore-canyon What to bring:
  • A personal lunch and one or more snacks
  • Wear comfortable shoes. Hiking shoes recommended but a good pair of sneakers will also suffice.
  • Sunblock.
  • A hat.
  • Water sufficient for each person for the duration of the hike.
  • Appropriate clothing for the weather that day. Bring a sweatshirt or sweater as the weather could change getting closer to the ocean.
  • Highly recommend bringing a back pack.

Start: Car Park for Sycamore Canyon Via Goleta, Thousand Oaks, CA 91320 (Located in Satwiwa) https://goo.gl/maps/QUVwGrGvHHhSHvbc7 Lunch: Danielson Ranch Multi-use Area (half way point) https://goo.gl/maps/T4BMVvwThKkU5Bww7 End: Sycamore Canyon Campground Address: 9000 W Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265, United States https://goo.gl/maps/Bv38NznhHdx6C6rW6

Next Pack Meeting on January 16th (Not Today)

Our January Pack meeting will be hosting our Pinewood Derby (PWD) races!  Our meeting has been moved from the 9th to the 16th in order to give Scouts more time to work on their cars.

The meeting will begin at 2pm.  Cars will be checked in at the beginning of the meeting where they will be weighed.  All cars over 5.0 ounces will be penalized 1 second for each extra ounce.

Rules to consider when building your car:
  • Width shall not exceed 2-3/4 inches.
  • Length shall not exceed 7 inches.
  • Total weight shall not exceed 5.0 ounces. Weighing your car with a small kitchen scale is advised if you have one.  Cars will be weighed prior to the race.  Weights can be added if needed.
  • Cars can be any shape of your choosing.
  • Axles, wheels, and body shall be from the materials provided in the kit.
  • Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.
  • No lubricating oil may be used. Axles may be lubricated with powdered graphite or silicone.
  • The car shall not ride on any kind of spring.
  • The car must be free-wheeling, with no starting devices.  Gravity will be your only motive force!
  • No loose materials of any kind are allowed in the car.
  • Any stylistic adornments are allowed provided they are not wider or longer than the specified limits.
  • Use of color is highly encouraged.

Parents can bring baked goods (cookies, cupcakes, donuts, etc.) to the event if they desire.  This is voluntary and strictly optional

What is Pinewood Derby?

Many new Cub Scouts and their parents might have a few questions on what Pinewood Derby is and what it is about.  Good information can be found here on the Scout Life website:

If any Scout has not received their Pinewood Derby kit for the January Pack meeting, please send an email to pack3763webmaster@gmail.com
